In 2021, Mimi Plange — a Ghanaian-born, American-raised designer who founded her brand in 2010 alongside Ibrahim Ndoye — teamed up with Nike for a four-part collection of LeBron 18 Low colorways. And following the release of ‘Higher Learning’ and ‘Daughters’, Plange will once again reinvent the signature sneaker, completing the lineup with two additional African-inspired colourways: ‘Scarred Perfection’ and ‘Mad King’.
With the “Scarred Perfection”, Plange celebrates African adornment and identity, effectively shining tradition through a more contemporary lens. “Individuality” and “tribalism” can be felt through the design, from the upper’s quilted elements to the Swoosh’s use of trapunto techniques. The color itself therefore backlights these various details with shades of ivory, coral, purple and sky blue.
The accompanying “Mad King” is dressed in the iconic writings of the Bantu people, an ethnolinguistic group in Africa with more than 400 distinct communities. Complementing its vibrant palette – which consists of rich hues inspired by nature – the shoe features the symbols of wisdom, unity, greatness and the future. Additionally, the image of the lion marks the shoe as a direct nod to LeBron himself.
The ‘Scarred Perfection’ and ‘Mad King’ colorways of the Nike LeBron 18 Low will be available on October 14 exclusively through mimiplange.com.
