Athletes are generally known for the uniforms they wear on the field, in the field or, if they are lucky, on the winner’s podium. But Maria Sharapova takes her off-duty style just as seriously. The Wimbledon champion and Olympic silver medalist has just launched her third collaboration with Nike – bringing back a new iteration of her cool Cortez trainers and, for the first time, also introducing apparel. Sharapova’s new Nike collection – La Cortez sneakers included – is meant to embody her classic, laid-back style. “I tend to stick to nude and gray colors, similar to what you’ll see in this collection,” Sharapova tells TZR via email. “In today’s sneaker culture, where it’s often all about having the trendiest and loudest shoe, The Cortez is something you can wear for years to come, and that reflects how I dress and shop for myself.”
Sharapova explains that her current schedule — she constantly travels but calls LA home — has made pieces like leggings and sweatshirts key not just to her workouts, but throughout her day. “I often wear gym clothes to and from my workout, so if I have a meeting in between, that’s usually what I’ll be wearing,” she explains. But, she notes that she is less focused on how a the look comes together, and more determined on how she feels walking into any room. “There are styling tricks to elevate athleisure, but ultimately it’s all about how much energy and confidence you bring to a certain look, and for me, I generally feel better when I’m the more comfortable.”
For the latest Nike collab, Sharapova chose a “blackened blue” color for her pieces because it’s transitional – easy to dress up or down – while still being essential. “When we designed each of the pieces, it was important that they captured my style off the court, incorporating timeless silhouettes that were truly versatile and functional,” she says. And while it might not be obvious at first glance, the accents, including the jacket’s Velcro tab (which reads Discipline in Cyrillic) nod to Sharapova’s Russian heritage, a detail she notes “seemed really special to me”. She adds: “I’ve worked with Nike for over a decade now, so it’s special to have the opportunity to go further with them and infuse my own unique style and aesthetic into a collection that is so essential for them.
Sharapova’s latest collaboration features four pieces in total, ranging from $55 to $150 and is available now at Nordstrom. The signature La Cortez sneaker is the standout, alongside leggings with Nike detailed on the waistband, a quilted bomber jacket with a Velcro patch and an embroidered long-sleeve shirt. You can wear them all together, as Sharapova shows, but each piece is designed to pair equally well with your current wardrobe staples. Her recommendation: try pairing the sneakers with a jumpsuit, “it’s a great transitional fall piece that you can layer over lightweight sweaters.”
